Arteza Awards

Guys, I have entered a contest. I, SUZANNA, HAVE ENTERED A CONTEST AND I AM hella nervous. Like I don’t even know where to begin with this. However, I am planning on taking you guys with me every step of the way. There is going to be video and bloopers and failure and everything in between. Be sure to follow me on Instagram to keep up to date with it all. I’ll be sure to make a whole compilation of everything after the announcement of the winners on August 31st and I’ll post it here.

So the deadline is August 24th for all entries. That means I have two weeks to get an illustration done. Can I do it? You can bet the farm on that one! The real question is, what is the piece going to be about? At this point in time, pfft I have no idea. But I am going to post some rough ideas up tomorrow to start things off. I am accepting any requests too. We can do this together!

If you want to know more about the contest or even enter yourself, check out Arteza. Don’t forget to follow along on the progress over on my Instagram! I’ll see you over there tomorrow! Come back on Saturday to see our next Sign. I still have so many questions about a goat-mermaid. Like, why even? I hope to see you then! Remember to stay safe and stay sane.

Until next time,

Suzanna 🌙

Entry 36: Obsession with a Meow

Hey Crew!

Welcome back everyone! 23 more days until classes begin. Even though I am taking all my courses online, I am still nervous. But I know everything is going to work out in the end. How are you guys doing? Have you listen to any good music lately? I’ve been feeling that I have only been listening to the same 5 songs for weeks. It is time for something new. Do you have any good suggestions?

Dedication to Hello Kitty

Did you guys figure it out? Are you surprised? I don’t even know where to start with my relationship with Hello Kitty. I have been told that I have an unhealthy obsession, but that doesn’t stop me. I can’t say that I can fill up a whole room with my collection, although I wish I could. Come Hell and high water I will invest in my collection to dedicate, at least, a whole room to Hello Kitty. You can bet the ponies on that. I low-key really want to live in the a Hello Kitty designed house. I think my best friend Brina will commit me to a psych ward though. It’ll be worth it!

You might be asking, “why Hello Kitty?” To be honest, I have no idea why Hello Kitty. All I know is that she plucks at a string in my soul. And I have learned that I need to listen to the notes that they sing. The same can be side with books, Tokidoki, the moon and stars, occult, Halloween, and just everything that I love. They fill me up with joy and happiness and that is what is important. So a word of advice, don’t listen to people who tell you that the things you like is trash or immature or whatever. If the things you like are not harming you or others and bring you joy continue loving them. Screw the people who shame you for liking something “childish” or weird. Your purpose in life is to do the things that speak to your soul and that bring you happiness. You will thank me later.

Now let us talk about this piece. As you know, I am still trying to figure out my style and what works for me. In the beginning I was having a real hard time trying to figure out the composition. Then I just said f*** it and just went balls to the walls. The flower behind Kitty is a daisy, which symbolizes purity and innocence. Plus in Sanrio’s world for Kitty, daisies are one of the most common flowers portrayed. I went with a vector based style, like that of the Art Nouveau illustrators. I can totally see this as a sticker for Sanrio. Ugh, it is too cute! What do you guys think?

And there you have it! I can call this one a success! Please visit Sanrio for everything Hello Kitty! I can’t emphasize it enough, I love everything that is cute and fun just like Hello Kitty. I hope to see you tomorrow when we talk about something that I just recently found out about. Talk about perfect timing! Remember to stay safe and to stay sane!

Until next time,

Suzanna 🌙

Entry 35: Finding Your Artistic Soul

Hey Crew!

Welcome back! How are you guys doing? I am not sure if it is just where I live, but I can already smell the Autumn air blowing in. I can’t wait! I can’t wait for fresh apples and cooler days. Plus all the spooky Halloween festivities. If you can’t tell already, Halloween is my favorite holiday. Do you think we should participate in Inktober? I’m still thinking about it, but maybe. Any-who, time to get to why we are all gathered here today.

How to Find Your Artistic Self

Now there is no right or wrong way to find your artistic style. I feel your eye roll too. I have never really felt like I have/had a “style”. And every book, blog, interview, lecture, and mentor never made sense to me. I felt like I was pulled in a million different ways and never felt close to what I was searching for. I think that also is part of me that is still so scared to show my work. I am getting more comfortable with it, but I still second guess myself. I still try to make excuses for mistakes I have made. But I have to realize that no one will really see the mistakes unless I point them out. They are going to read the art with their own eyes and make their own story from it. That is why I don’t write as much as I once did about my work. I keep them whiddled down to technique and some back story. The saying “I’m my own worst enemy” needs to be craved into my gravestone at this point.*

Anyway, what I am trying to say is to take my advice like a grain of salt. Maybe my process and ideas will work for you or they won’t. But if I can strike a cord with just one of you and I have made the difference in your thinking and work, then I have done my job.

What do you like?

I want you to figure out what kind of art/creations appeal to you the most. What kind of things do you like to read about? Fantasy, war, history, mystery, romance, etc? Why do you like them? Do they pick at a string in your soul? Do you find it calming? Do you find them make you happy? I want you to take that feeling that you feel about your favorite books and figure out what kind of visual art gives you that same feeling. Do you like bold line work? Do you like bright colors? Does your eye tend to follow realistic artwork or more abstract? What sparks your fire?

Personally, my likes are very fluid. But there are a few things that will allows grab my attention.

  • Bold Lines
  • Flat
  • Simple
  • Geometric
  • Vector

I know what you are thinking, “But Suzanna, your artwork doesn’t really reflect that.” I know. That is part of my inner battle. Part of me thinks that “good” art is detailed and full of depth and “perfection”. And the other side is screaming to just go with the flow and do what makes me happy. There is no right or wrong way to create. There is just the way that makes your soul sing. I think that is one of the most toxic thing in the art world, that there is a right and wrong way. The thinking that perfection and following the rules destroy creativity. There is no right or wrong way, there is only your way. And that is something that I am still fighting within my own work. But I am not going to let it rule over me anymore.

Time to do some research.

Knowledge is power. I am not staying that you have to get your PhD in Art History to understand how to find your style. All I am saying is that a quick Google search will help you. I personally would head over the the library and look into art history books, but I am just that kind of nerdy, book lover. I just want you to skim over the history of art periods and note which periods strike that cord in you.

Here are my favorite times in art history.

  • The Golden Age of Illustration (1850 – 1925)
  • Art Nouveau (1890 -1910)
  • Art Deco (1908 – 1935)

From here I can look to the masters of these time periods. To see how they went about their pieces. To see what they were used for. To see the impact of their art on culture and society.

How did the Masters pull it off?

Now I want you to pick out a few of the masters from the time period(s) you fancied. It is time to get down in the dirt. I want you to copy the masters. Copy their work. Now I am not saying plagiarize their work, don’t ever plagiarize another’s work. No, I want you do use the pieces as a method of learning. Think of it as developing muscle memory. The more you do something over and over the easier it gets, to a point were you don’t even think about it. Which leads us to that boorish word of Practice. Unfortunately, practice does make perfect. I hate it too, my friends. It is needed to train your hand-eye coordination and your brain. Sort of like learning to type. You first start off slow and one figuring the keys. Then you start adding more of your fingers and need to build up their strength and knowing what key you are hitting without looking. Then you pick up speed. And soon you are typing as fast as you can think of the words.

You can also copy the masters to help blow past your art block. It keeps you creating. It starts making you think. It brings that fire back to life. It brings you closer to your self.

How can you make it your own?

Look at your doodles and sketchbooks, can you see the similarities in the work that you create without even thinking about it? That means you are halfway there already. Keep playing with your craft. Keep experimenting. You have to get comfortable with your art. You just have to let it flow. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to your art. It is your art, you need to reclaim it from the toxic space that tells you it isn’t good enough. You are an artist, you are good enough.

To summarize; find out what hits you in your soul, research history and masters, copy the masters, learn their skills, and make it your own through practice. Once you start listening to what fills you with happiness, you will start to see how good you actually are. Always be yourself and that is where you will find your true style and your true self.

I hope this has helped you with your own journey. I know I still have a lot to learn myself. I also know that I have a lot more practicing to do too. Well we better get to it, right? I’ll see you tomorrow to see the what I have in store for Tuesday’s Fan-Art days. Do you have any ideas? Can’t wait! Remember to stay safe and to stay sane.

Until next time,

Suzanna 🌙

Entry 33: Sagittarius the Optimist

Hey Crew!

Welcome back! How are you guys doing? Have you been liking all the new content this week? Things are really starting to heat up around here. 29 more days until classes start! I’m super excited to get back to school. I have always been that strange kid that loves school. I think it is mostly about the structure and the social interactions that is appealing to me. I am lucky that my graduate schooling is online, but there are major concerns going on about reopening schools around the nation. Do what is best for the health of you and your family. Contact your government officials and tell them your concerns. And if they don’t listen the first time, basically blow up their phones. Call, write, email, text, protest, do what you can to get their attention. Don’t let them blackmail your schools and community with withholding money because all they want is the adults to go back to work. You and your family’s health is your #1 priority. Don’t listen to the lies. You can get your education anytime and in a bunch of different ways, but you can’t bring the dead back to life. Stay strong. That concludes today’s rant, now back to the art!

Sagittarius the Optimist

Basic Facts:

  • Birth Dates: November 22 – December 21
  • Element: Fire
  • Ruling Planet: Jupiter
  • Symbol: Centaur
  • This Sign is the poster child of optimism. They can also be very blunt and straight to the point. They can turn any sort of negative event into a positive on. Plus they always seem to be the funny one in the friend group.

When you think of fire what do you think of? Campfire, arson, fireworks, candles, fireplaces, or etc? I could not come up with a composition that was compatible with the rest of the Series. Then when I was taking my pupper out for potty time, I figured it out. Fireflies. (Or Lightning Bugs if you are from the South and Midwest.) I thought it would be a cute little funny. The Magic of Art helped with making it look like they are actually glowing. But in the final piece I added of highlights in Photoshop to make them pop a little bit more. I also love how much Jupiter takes up the canvas. I wanted to make sure to emphasize the size of Jupiter compare to the other Signs. What do you guys think?

So we are half way done with the Zodiac Series! The next Sign is a goat mermaid…? How that makes sense, I still don’t know. Come back tomorrow for a Special Announcement! Sundays are going to be fun days! Make sure you also remember to take a self care day. The summer is coming to a close and things are going to get more chaotic. Remember you can’t control the world, but you can control YOUR world. Kick out the toxic things in your life. Choose a day out of the week just to vibe and do you. It is the little things that go a long way. Remember to stay safe and to stay sane.

Until next time,

Suzanna🌙

Entry 34: Comic Sunday

Hey Crew!

Happy Sunday! How are you guys doing? It has been a long week for me. First week of the new workload and my cat, Turtle, came home from the vets. He is big mad at the cone he has to wear. But he is doing a lot better! What do you guys think of the weekly projects? I am always open for suggestions and critics.

So, did you guys figure out what I meant back on Monday’s post for Sundays? I hope you guessed that I am starting back up The Struggles of an Artist again! (Signal the loud applause sound bite.) It has been way too long of a wait for this. I am also starting a comic about The Adventures of Floof (my angry bird mascot). I am thinking of trading off Sundays for each one. I am not going to be making a blog post each Sunday for a comic. I feel like that is overkill. But I am going to be posting them on my Home page and on their own respective pages. But you’ll be able to quickly find them on my Instagram.

Starting next Sunday keep an eye out for the latest comic! Stop back tomorrow for a discussion about art styles and finding your groove. Things are just getting started! Remember to stay safe and stay sane.

Until next time,

Suzanna🌙

Entry 32: What if the Zodiacs Were… (Part 2)

Hey Crew!

Happy Wednesday everyone! Welcome to the first day of Side Project Wednesday! Most of the time these projects are going to be broken up into parts, because I’ll be using my free time to work on them. Are you ready to rock?

(Left) Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius / (Right) Aries, Taurus, Gemini

So here is the last of the Zodiacs. If you want to know more about the meaning behind symbols and style read the first post here.

What do you guys think? I had so much fun with these! I am really proud of how they look and how they match with the actual Tokidoki Unicornos. I enjoyed how this project pushed me to be very vector based and simple. I know that is a struggle for me. I have like this internal conflict about if I have enough detail or if things need shadow or more lines, and on the flip side I think less is more. The struggle is real.

Don’t forget to check out my IG Friday for a double picture of #BlackoutFridays. Saturday the next Sign is going to be released. Do you know which one is next? Sunday there is going to be an announcement about Sunday Comic Day! Things are moving forward. See you soon! Remember to stay safe and stay sane!

Until next time,

Suzanna 🌙

Entry 31: Breaking Into the Industry: Fan-Art

Hey Crew!

Welcome back! It is strange to be here on a Tuesday, but there is no rest for the wicked! What do you guys think of the new changes that are coming? I’m going to need your help to keep me on target, because your Captain tends to flow like a stream sometimes and forgets where she is going. I’m counting on you guys!

What is Fan-Art?

artwork based on popular works of fiction (such as books, movies, etc.) that is created by fans

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fanart

How does Fan-Art Help with Breaking into the Industry?

When you make fan-art you are paying homage something/someone you like and admire. With that you can share the love with all the other fans and build connections. It can show a great number of people what skills you have. It can help you grow your audience and clients much faster.

What are the Art World’s Thoughts on Fan-Art?

In the art world, fan-art is a double edged sword. On one hand, it is a great way to reach a lot of people quickly. On the other hand, it is a legal nightmare. Like you hear of artists receiving Cease and Desist Orders from large companies telling them to stop selling the fan-art on their copyrighted characters. Take the TinkerBell piece that I did recently, if I chose to sell prints or the original Disney could slap me with fines and other legal action. In turn that can destroy an artist. At the same time, holders of the original copyright love to see the love that their fans show to their creations. Fan-art can bring people from all walks of life together, you just can’t profit from it without consent from the OG creators.

There is that grey area. You’ll see small artists selling their fan-art, thinking that the OG creators are not paying attention. Take for example my TinkerBell piece, if I sold like 100 prints of it and profit like $500, I might seem to be under the radar. But say I make other pieces of TinkerBell and then other pieces of other Disney own characters and think I can profit from them as easily as before. Now I have like 20 different characters and am making bank on prints and other merch. I can bet Disney is already in court suing me for copyright infringement and want all of the profit. I would be destroyed. Morel of the story, even if you think they aren’t watching you, they are and they are just waiting for you to get greedy.

Why should I be Creating Fan-Art?

I want to make something very clear:

I AM NEVER GOING TO PROFIT OFF OF MY FAN-ART!

The only exception to this is if companies/artists/creators ask me to work with them. I also want you to know there are things in the public domain, like Alice in Wonderland, that are fair game.

I want to grow as an artist. I also want to connect with people. So if I show you what I like and able to start a conversation with you and other people who enjoy the same things, why shouldn’t I take that chance? In this world of social media and trending topics, if you want to reach a large audience you got to give the people what they want.

I hope this all makes more sense to you guys. If you still have questions, please ask. I’m excited for next Tuesday! This first Fan-Art is going to be super cute! And you’ll learn of a super obsession of mine. Are you ready? Don’t forget to stop by tomorrow for Part 2 of the Tokidoki Zodiacs! Too cute!!!!! Remember to stay safe and to stay sane.

Until next time,

Suzanna 🌙

Entry 30: August Update

Hey Crew!

Happy Monday? Can Mondays be happy? Or does that defy the laws of the universe? Squirrel. Anyways, how are you guys doing? For those who are in the USA with me, are you registered to vote? Please register, as a nation we can not have another 4 freaking years of this BS. And that ends my political rant. Thank you for your time.

What is coming in August?

So classes are starting in exactly a month from today. That means there is a lot of stuff to do and it is crunch time. Are you ready? No time to think, just time to go go.

Art + Personal Talk:

It is going to be like every Monday we have done for a while. I will be talking about new things that will be added to the Shop, some art history, how school is going, about my art styles and skills, or anything that I think I should share with you guys. I’ll also use Mondays for any special announcements that is going to happen later in the week.

Main Series/Projects:

Right now Saturdays are for the Zodiac Series. I have many more series planned for the future. So stay tuned!

Fan-Art:

There is going to be a solo post tomorrow to explain about this category. Get ready for the shinanagines.

Personal/ Random Projects:

This day is for small side projects that I am working on in the background that have nothing to do with the Main Series. So think of the Tokidoki Project or updating my Self Branding. I’ll also use this day to tell/show you guys about school assignments starting in September.

Comic:

The long and awaited day has arrived! Sundays are going to be Comic Days. Can you figure out which project I am referring to? DUN-DUN-DUN!!!

BLM:

Head on over to my Instagram and find out what happens on #BlackoutFridays . I promise you won’t regret it.

If I want to become the best artist/freelancer/creative I can be, I have to get serious about things. I have to flip the switch from thinking this is a fun hobby that I only am dreaming to some how become successful, to treating this as a full time job. I can’t rely on wishes and hopes to get to the position that I want to be in, I have to put the petal to the metal. I am obviously going to be working on projects and research for different topics and such every day, but at some point I want to be able to manage my time so well that I can rely on Thursday and Friday for editing, planning, getting ahead and the little things that take time away from creating. We shall get there! I know once school starts a monkey wrench is going to be thrown in the works, but I should be able to account for that if I play my cards right.

I hope you guys are ready. Things are definitely going to heating up from here on. Don’t forget tomorrow we are going to talking more in depth about fan-art. Our adventures on the Artist Seas are just beginning!

Until next time,

Suzanna 🌙

Entry 29: Scorpio the Mysterious

Hey Crew!

Sorry that this post is a little late. All this week I have been preoccupied with my sick cat. But luckily the vets have patched him up and he is on the road to recovery. How have you guys been? Are you just as surprised as me that it is already August? One more month until classes start. Oh boy. Things are starting to get real now. Is there anything that you guys are looking forward to in August and/or September?

Scorpios Have Come to Town

Basic Facts about Scorpios

  • Birth Dates: October 23 – November 22
  • Element: Water
  • Ruling Planets: Mars & Pluto
  • Symbol: Scorpion
  • Scorpios feel the most and deeply. They are calm and cool by nature. They are unstoppable go getters.

To see more of the Zodiacs check out my YouTube channel 🙂

We are coming full circle with the elements for the Signs. It took me a while to come up with a plan to incorporate water again and not have it look like Cancer. I was also very nervous to do I bird eye view of the reflective surface of water with water ripples. But it came out WAY better than I thought it would have! I also love how Mars and Pluto came out. What do you guys think? I hope you guys enjoyed watching how this piece came together. Did you also catch where I put the hidden scorpion? I’m so sneaky. Tehehe.

So that wraps up this Sign. Things are going to be looking a little different from now on. Be sure to come back on Monday to see what is up. Are you ready to rock ‘n’ roll? It is going to be an epic adventure. See you then!

Until next time,

Suzanna🌙

Entry 28: What if the Zodiacs were… (Part 1)

Hey Crew!

Welcome back! How are you guys doing? How are you guys liking the Zodiac Series? I am having a lot of fun with them. We are 4 down and 8 more to go! October is going to be here faster than we think. I am definitely ready for Autumn.

Anyways, I want to share with you guys a side project I have been working on. A couple of months ago I posted a DYI Unicorno that I painted on Instagram. I also thought about doing the whole Zodiac as Unicornos. Can you see where this is going?

(Left) Cancer, Leo, Virgo / (Right) Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces

I am using this project to get better with Adobe Illustrator. I wanted to make them all be uniform. Each Sign has their own color palette. The little blushes are colored after each Sign’s main birthstone. The little charms in the mane are the Signs’ symbols. I also added each one’s ruling planet as the little birthmark on the rear end. I added the constellations on each of the Sign’s wings. The triangles you see are symbols their elements.

What do you guys think? I am loving how they are coming out. I low key want to get more of the DIY Unicornos to make mock ups of all of them. Someday.

I want to state that I am not working with Tokidoki. This is basically fan-art and a learning project.

Please go support their business. I love the Unicornos, personally. Actually, some would call it an obsession. 🤣 I am just an avid collector of cute things. https://www.tokidoki.it/

Don’t worry, I’ll be posting the last 6 of the Signs soon. I’ve got to keep you guys coming back for more. 😊

I hope you guys all enjoy the rest of your day. Remember to stay safe and to stay sane.

Until next time,

Suzanna 🌙
